Hyperhomocysteinemia and Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase C677T Polymorphism in Cerebral Veno-sinus Thrombosis

The relationship between Homocysteine (Hcy), MTHFR C677T polymorphism and Cerebral Veno-sinus Thrombosis (CVT) in an Indian population was studied by Bharatkumar et al (2014). 185 patients with CVT were studied against 248 healthy controls. Fasting Hcy was found to be higher in patients with CVT, representing a 4.54 fold increased risk of CVT development when compared to controls. Plasma Hcy was higher in patients with the 677TT genotype when compared to 677CT or 677CC, but overall the risk was insignificant. The authors concluded that MTHFR 677TT genotype is not linked with CVT, but is a determinate of Hcy, of which is a risk marker for Indian CVT patients.
