MTHFR C677T TT homozygous associated with a 13% higher risk of stroke in a Chinese population.

A recent study out of China published in October 2023 shows that the MTHFR C677T TT homozygous polymorphism is associated with 13% higher risks of stroke.
This was a study of 156,253 participants and showed around 21% of the Chinese population studied were TT homozygous MTFHR C677T. Those who were homozygous had a 13% higher risk of all strokes (24% higher risk of intracerebral haemorrhage and 11% higher risk of ischaemic stroke) than those with the wild type.
Interestingly the study identified that Chinese frequency of homozygote MTHFR C677T was twice that of Western populations.
The study also highlighted that folic acid had no protective effect on total stroke in populations with mandatory or voluntary folic acid fortification.
