New research highlights disturbances in methylation with autism spectrum disorder. This study investigated the disturbance of the one carbon metabolism cycle (methylation cycle) with autism spectrum disorder and found that children with Ask had significant differences in SAM, oxidised glutathione, choline, glycine, serine, cystathionine, cysteine and taurine levels. They concluded that understanding and modifying the methionine cycles and trans sulphuration pathways could be a promising therapeutic tool in helping children with ASD.
