What is Erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is the inability to achieve or sustain an erection suitable for sexual intercourse. Causes include medications, chronic illnesses, poor blood flow to the penis, drinking too much alcohol, or being too tired.

Research

The MTHFR genes play important rolls in the metabolism of folate and homocysteine. Mutations in the MTHFR genes have therefore been associated with high homocysteine levels, which them negatively affect the health of blood vessels. Therefore, Safarinrjad et al (2010) examined the link between MTHFR gene mutations, and the risk of early onset vascular related erectile dysfunction (ED). Results found those with the vascular related ED had higher homocysteine levels, along with a higher prevalence of the 677TT mutation when compared to controls. Men with the MTHFR 677TT genotype and the 677TT/ A1298C combined genotype had a 3.16 and 3.89 increased risk of developing ED respectively.
