Methylation and the folate pathway are expected to play an important role in the production of health sperm as it is involved in DNA synthesis, repair and methylation. Therefore, Mfady et al (2014) studied the relationship between male infertility and the MTHFR and MTRR polymorphisms. 150 Jordanian men presenting with oligozoospermia, severe oligozoospermia and azoospermia were studied against 150 age matched fertile Jordanian controls.
Results showed an association between MTHFR 677TT and male infertility, however none of the examined mutations were related to any of the semen parameters in the infertile group. Also, the presentation of MTHFR A1298C and MTRR A66G genotypes were not different between infertile men and the fertile control group. Overall, the C677T MTHFR mutation was associated with male infertility in a Jordanian population.
